Coaching Philosophy

“Attacking chess, based on sound fundamental chess principles, using logical thinking and problem solving techniques”

“Developing a lifelong love for chess”

“Ensuring students benefit in other areas of their lives and education by playing chess at a higher level”

These are just 3 short sentences that say a whole lot about my coaching philosophy. I have played this wonderful game for over 45 years and helping others to learn the game and grow as chess players and as people is incredibly rewarding.

As much as I believe that chess is both and art and a science, and I often say things like “Wow, that’s a beautiful move”, I do think that as beginners and intermediate players, a structured, logical approach is key.

I like to teach (and play) attacking chess (as it is usually easier to attack than defend), but this desire to attack must be based on sound principles.

So I teach these basic principles, and a logic based problem solving approach to chess, as well as instilling fabulous attacking ideas in the minds of my students!
